IPL vs Chemical Peel for Sun Spots: Which First?

Late September is when it shows up. The tan fades, the freckles that looked cute in July stay behind, and a few flat brown spots on the cheekbones, shoulders or backs of the hands suddenly look darker than they did last year. Maybe there is a little more redness around the nose, too.
Almost everyone who calls us this time of year asks the same question: should I do IPL or a chemical peel? Both are sold as "sun damage" treatments. Both promise more even skin. They are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one first can cost you a season.
Here is the honest comparison from the team at SkinX Spa in Ajax.
The short answer: IPL works on pigment and redness that sit in clusters — distinct sun spots, age spots, freckling, flushed cheeks and small visible vessels. A chemical peel works on the whole surface at once — overall dullness, rough texture, diffuse uneven tone and the dark marks acne leaves behind. If you can point at your spots, IPL is usually the faster route. If your skin just looks tired and blotchy all over, or you have a deeper skin tone, a peel is usually the safer and smarter start.
Why Fall Is the Season for Both
Neither treatment gets along with fresh sun. IPL light is drawn to pigment, so a tan competes with the spots you actually want to target — which is why IPL is best done when your skin is at its palest, not straight after a beach week. Peels leave new skin more sun-sensitive for a couple of weeks afterwards.
That makes October through March the natural window in Durham Region. Shorter days, lower UV and more time indoors mean your skin gets a chance to settle between sessions, and you walk into next summer with the work already done. Daily SPF is still non-negotiable — Ontario UV is lower in winter, not zero.
How IPL Works on Sun Spots
IPL (intense pulsed light) is not a laser — it is a broad band of filtered light delivered in short pulses through a handpiece. At SkinX Spa we use the SharpLight DPC PRO, a Health Canada-licensed, FDA-cleared platform.
The light is absorbed by two targets:
- Melanin in a sun spot or freckle. The spot heats slightly, darkens over the next day or two — clients often describe it as looking like coffee grounds — then flakes away on its own, typically within about a week.
- Haemoglobin in small dilated vessels. That is why IPL is also our go-to for flushing, diffuse redness and the little broken capillaries around the nose.
Because it targets contrast, IPL works best when a spot is clearly darker than the skin around it — and when that surrounding skin is on the lighter-to-medium side.
What a session is like: your skin is cleansed, you wear protective eyewear, and a cool gel goes on the area. Each pulse feels like a quick warm snap, similar to a rubber band flick. A full face takes roughly 20–30 minutes; a targeted spot takes a few. Expect mild redness or warmth for an hour or two. Makeup is generally fine the next day.
How many sessions: most people plan on a short series of 3–6 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Obvious spots often lighten noticeably after the first; redness fades more gradually across the series. Individual results vary.

How a Chemical Peel Works on Sun Damage
A peel is controlled exfoliation. A professional acid solution is brushed across the skin and timed carefully, loosening the bonds that hold dull, pigmented surface cells in place. Over the following days those cells shed and fresher skin comes through. Because it treats the whole area evenly, a peel is good at the "everything looks a bit uneven" problem that IPL is not designed for.
At SkinX Spa we use the GlyMed Plus exfoliating peel family rather than a glycolic-only menu. Glycolic acid penetrates fast and unevenly, which carries a higher risk of post-inflammatory darkening on deeper skin tones — and Ajax and Durham Region are wonderfully diverse. Our three peels:
- Calm Skin Peel — $95. Lactic and mandelic with chamomile and arnica. Our gentlest peel, for reactive or rosacea-prone skin and first-timers.
- Clear Skin Peel — $115. Azelaic, salicylic and lactic with sulfur. For congestion and breakouts, and the dark marks they leave behind.
- Bright Skin Peel — $140. Azelaic, lactic and mandelic. Built for dark spots, uneven tone and melasma-prone skin, and the one we reach for most on deeper skin tones.
What a session is like: a thorough cleanse, the peel brushed on in thin layers, a tingle or mild warmth for a few minutes, then neutralising and soothing products. You leave looking slightly flushed. Mild flaking for a few days is normal and means the peel is doing its job.
How many sessions: a series of three, a few weeks apart, is typical for tone and pigment. Individual results vary. See our facials and peels menu.
Head to Head, by Concern
Distinct brown sun spots and age spots — IPL
If you can count them, IPL is usually the quicker route on lighter and medium skin. The light goes straight for the spot.
Freckling across the nose, cheeks or chest — IPL
Clusters of sun freckles are one of IPL's best-suited uses. A peel will brighten the overall area but tends to soften freckles more gradually.
Redness, flushing and small visible vessels — IPL
Peels cannot reach vessels. If redness is part of your complaint, IPL is the one that addresses it. (If your skin is very reactive, we may start you with the Calm Skin Peel first to settle it.)
Overall dullness and rough, "summer-dried" texture — peel
A peel resurfaces the whole area evenly. IPL does not exfoliate.
Dark marks left after breakouts — peel first
Post-acne marks usually respond better to the Clear Skin or Bright Skin Peel than to IPL. For indented acne scars, neither is the answer — that is a job for microneedling.
Melasma (hormonal, blotchy patches) — peel first, carefully
Melasma reacts to heat and light, so it needs a gentle, patient approach. The Bright Skin Peel with consistent home care is our usual starting point; IPL on melasma is only considered after a careful assessment.
Spots on the hands or décolleté — IPL
Hands, chest and neck show sun damage early. IPL treats these areas well, priced per area below.
Skin Tone Changes the Answer
This is the part most comparison articles skip.
IPL light is absorbed by melanin. On lighter and medium skin tones (roughly Fitzpatrick I–IV) there is good contrast between a sun spot and the skin around it, so the light goes where it should. On deeper tones (Fitzpatrick V–VI) the surrounding skin absorbs more of that light too, which raises the risk of pigment change. That is why our IPL service is best suited to lighter and medium tones, and why Papri assesses every client before a first session.
If you have a deeper skin tone, that does not mean you are stuck with your spots. The Bright Skin Peel, microneedling with a brightening serum, or a GlyMed brightening facial are all approaches we use on every tone. The consultation is where we tell you honestly which fits — sometimes the honest answer is also the cheaper one.
Downtime, Honestly
| IPL | Chemical peel | |
|---|---|---|
| Right after | Mild redness or warmth, an hour or two | Slight flush, sometimes tightness |
| Days 1–7 | Treated spots darken, then flake away | Light flaking or dryness for a few days |
| Makeup | Usually the next day | Usually the next day, over a good moisturiser |
| Big no | Sun and tanning before and after | Picking at flaking skin, retinol for several days |
| SPF | Every day, no exceptions | Every day, no exceptions |
Neither is a "hide at home for a week" treatment, but plan either one at least a week before a big event.
Aftercare That Protects Your Results
For both treatments:
- Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day, even on grey Ajax afternoons.
- Skip retinol, exfoliating acids and scrubs for several days — we will give you the exact timing.
- Let spots and flaking come off on their own. Picking is the fastest way to create a new mark.
- Keep skin hydrated with a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser.
- Avoid hot tubs, saunas and hard workouts for 24–48 hours.
Papri will send you home with a simple routine, and our GlyMed home care is there if you want help keeping results even between visits.

Can You Do Both?
Yes — and for a lot of post-summer skin, that is the best plan. A common sequence is IPL for the distinct spots and redness, then a peel a few weeks later to even out the overall surface and brighten what is left. They are never done on the same day, and we space them so your skin fully settles in between. We map out the order at your consultation.
Who Should Wait
Hold off on either treatment and talk to us first if you:
- Have a fresh tan or sunburn, or have used self-tanner in the last couple of weeks.
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Are using, or recently finished, isotretinoin (Accutane).
- Take medication that makes your skin more light-sensitive.
- Have an active cold sore, rash or broken skin in the area.
- Have a spot that is changing, bleeding, itchy or irregular — please see your doctor first. We treat cosmetic sun spots, and a spot that looks unusual should always be checked medically before any cosmetic treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IPL or a chemical peel better for sun spots? For distinct brown sun spots on lighter to medium skin, IPL is usually the faster option. For overall uneven tone, dullness or deeper skin tones, a peel is usually the better start. Many clients benefit from both, spaced apart.
Does IPL hurt more than a peel? They feel different. IPL is a series of quick warm snaps; a peel is a few minutes of tingling or warmth. Most people find both very manageable.
How soon will I see a difference? After IPL, treated spots typically darken and flake away within about a week. After a peel, skin usually looks brighter once flaking finishes. Both build over a series. Individual results vary.
Will my sun spots come back? Treated spots generally stay lighter, but new sun exposure creates new ones. Daily SPF and an occasional maintenance session keep things even.
I have a deeper skin tone. Can I still do IPL? Our IPL is best suited to lighter and medium skin tones. For deeper tones we usually recommend the Bright Skin Peel or microneedling instead, both of which we use on every skin tone. A consultation settles it.
Is now a good time to start? Yes. Fall and winter are the ideal window — lower UV, less chance of a tan getting in the way, and results ready before next summer.
